The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a famous building in Italy. The Tower is famous because it tilts to one side. The tower began to tilt
during its construction in the 1200s. In the following decades, the tilt only got worse. The builders of the tower came up with differ
ent ideas to explain this. In the end, they concluded that the ground the tower sat on was too soft and caused the building to sink on
one side.
Although tilted, the tower still exists today. In fact, it is a major tourist attraction. Modern builders have done things to make sure the
tower c
\ontinues to lean, but does not fall down. Their efforts have been successful. Between 1990 and 2001, the tower leaned at an angle of
5.5 d
egrees. But the tower now leans at about 3.99 degrees. In 2008, construction workers performed more work on the tower.
They removed 7
7 tons of ground to try to make the tower more level. They say the tower will now be stable for the next 200 years.
